Vestry Shepherd's Corner - May 2008

Hold your shovels and Hold the Date!

St. Thomas Plant Sale and Craft Fair
May 10th  from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The first annual St. Thomas Plant Sale and Craft Fair will take place on May 10th, just in time for Mother’s Day and the perfect time for planting in Virginia (you run the risk of frost if you plant before this date!).

Plant Sale: On May 10th our front lawn will be awash in colorful plants, including both shade and sun annuals for your beds and containers.  We have promoted this event to the local churches and several local publications and are hoping for many takers – rain or shine.  Parishioners will be invited to shop early on Friday, May 9th, so come early for the best selection – and bring a friend!

The Craft Fair:  We expect 15-20 vendors at the craft sale, including crafters selling jewelry, scarves, pottery, monogrammed items, dried flower crafts and handmade soap vendors.  We are excited that several crafters have readily responded to this event so please come and take a look – and tell a friend!

Volunteering: Please look at your calendars now and set aside some time to volunteer (and did we say shop?) on Saturday, May 10th. There will be 2 hour shifts; volunteers can work both inside and out from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.  Inside shifts include: handling the welcome table and ticket sales, selling snacks, “policing” the hall. and helping shoppers and vendors.  Outside volunteers will include anyone who can help carry a flat of plants, gardeners who can help buyers with plant selection, and workers to checkout people.  This promises to be a fun-filled and exciting day and volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate.

Other FUNdraising Updates

Looking Forward to Pumpkins: Though Spring has just begun, later in May we will begin planning and organizing for the Pumpkin Sale! We have submitted an order for pumpkins to our partner www.pumpkinsUSA.com and are awaiting confirmation of our delivery date.   We’ll need “all hands on deck” for this adventure and look forward to your participation.   For starters, if you have any pumpkin costumes or pumpkin-related decorations and are willing to donate them please bring them to church and give them to Lori Engelhardt.  We’ll use these items for our promotional activities.  Other volunteer tasks will include set-up and decoration, managing finances, organizing and monitoring volunteer staffing (our most significant task) and more.  Once we have recruited enough sales volunteers we will seek to offer such “extras” as selling pumpkin-related baked goods and children’s activities.  It will be lots of work for a short period of time, but the financial rewards look promising and will be used to support our outreach activities.

Coffee Update: Thanks to all who supported the coffee sales!  Though we still have just a few bags, it looks like we will net just over $750 from this event.

As we outlined earlier in the year, our goal is to generate revenue by selling products that parishioners and others are buying anyway, to not incur significant up-front costs, and to further strengthen our community by working together to accomplish the goal of generating revenues to support programs that matter  -- outreach.  Thanks again to all and we look forward to seeing you on May 10th!
