Meet St. Thomas' new Minister for Children and Youth |
Our New Minister for Children and Youth Betsy Baumgarten
Our New Assistant Betsy Baumgarten, a priest from the Diocese of Minnesota and recent graduate of the Virginia Theological Seminary, has begun as the new Assistant Rector for Children, Youth, and Young Adults at St. Thomas’. Last spring Betsy impressed both the vestry and the interview committee with her energy, her desire to work with young people, and her creative way of thinking about this ministry. Her roots in the upper Midwest (Minnesota) also impressed our Jr. Warden (Cleta Raymond, North Dakota) and our education Shepherd (DiAnn Park, South Dakota). She will make a dynamic addition to our staff. Betsy grew up in Duluth, a port town on the tip of Lake Superior. She attended St. Olaf’s College in Northfield, Minnesota, and then returned to St. Paul’s Church in Duluth as a youth minister before moving to the balmy climes of northern Virginia to attend Seminary at VTS. At St. Paul’s Betsy ran the Jr. and Sr. High youth groups, organized the Halloween Carnival and Community Summer Festival for the whole parish, and led a mission trip to Nogales, Arizona. She also worked with low-income youth as the Director of Youth Programming at the East Hillside Patch—an outreach program in Duluth. While at VTS, Betsy was the seminarian for St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, DC and an intern with Samaritan Ministries. She comes to us, in other words, with a rich background that will equip her for her work here. Betsy also describes herself as an avid about the great outdoors. She loves hiking, canoeing/kayaking, camping, cycling, eating good food, and knitting. She will be a helpful resource for us all as we contemplate what it means for us to take care of the natural world with which God has blessed us. Betsy was also recently married to Robert Wetherington on April 19. Robert will be a senior at VTS and looking for a call next May. We are grateful to be blessed with Betsy’s ministry here.
